Trusting God with Your Finances: The Joy of Tithing and Faithful Planning

Money is one of the most sensitive and stressful parts of life for many people. It can feel like there’s never enough to cover all the bills, save for the future, and still enjoy life. But what if our financial approach started with trust—not in ourselves or our circumstances, but in God?

The Bible makes it clear: everything we have comes from Him. Our abilities, intelligence, strength, and opportunities—they’re all gifts from a generous God who loves us. He entrusts us with these blessings, asking only that we honor Him first with a tenth of what He’s given us.

Deuteronomy 14:22 says, “You must set aside a tithe of your crops—one-tenth of all the crops you harvest each year. Bring this tithe to the designated place of worship—the place the LORD your God chooses for his name to be honored—and eat it there in his presence.”

While tithing may feel counterintuitive at first, it’s actually an invitation into a life of greater joy, freedom, and trust.

The Tension of Trust

For most people, money represents security, comfort, and even identity. It’s no wonder that letting go of a portion of it can feel risky. But that’s exactly where trust begins. God knows the weight that financial stress brings—He sees our worries. In Malachi 3:10, He extends an extraordinary invitation: “Test me in this,” He says. “See if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.”

God doesn’t ask us to tithe because He needs our money—He owns it all anyway. He asks us to give so that we keep Him first in our hearts and so that we experience the joy that generosity brings.

The Blessing of Sacrifice

Tithing often involves sacrifice. It may mean delaying a purchase, adjusting a budget, or giving up something we enjoy. But on the other side of that sacrifice is something unexpected: joy. When we give with an open heart, God transforms us from the inside out. We become more content, less anxious, and more aware of His blessings. Giving loosens the grip of greed and strengthens our trust in God’s provision.

Beyond personal blessings, tithing fuels the work of the church—the local body of believers that God uses to transform lives and communities. Every church seat, ministry, and outreach program exists because someone gave. When we give, we become part of something bigger than ourselves. We help create spaces where broken people find healing, where lonely people find community, and where lost people find Jesus.

God Works Through Us

Our giving doesn’t just change us—it allows God to work through us. Whether it’s supporting missions, launching new church campuses, or creating ministries for families, our generosity fuels life change. Every dollar represents a potential story of redemption. We may never know who’s sitting in the seat we helped pay for, but one day, someone will look back and thank God for the chance to experience His love—because of a gift we gave in faith.

The truth is, tithing doesn’t guarantee wealth or a life free from hardship. Jesus Himself said that in this world, we will have trouble (John 16:33). But He also promises to walk with us through it all, providing for our needs and blessing us in ways we never expected.

So what if we took that step of faith? What if we trusted God with our finances, believing that He truly wants what’s best for us? Whether you’re just starting to explore tithing or you’ve been faithfully giving for years, remember this: God is doing something in you—and through you—that you may not even see yet. And one day, someone might just look back and realize that their life changed because of the seat you helped provide.
